Penalties for breaking the law are stiff and getting stiffer all the time. An overzealous court can set up defendants to suffer for much more than they bargained for if they are convicted of a crime. One such crime with stiff penalties is felony DUI. A recent news story out of Tennessee tells about the charges against one man and reveals what the penalties for DUI can be.

The man was arrested for his alleged fifth DUI. Such repeat arrests are subject to felony charges in Tennessee. The man was charged for the latest DUI last year and will soon appear before a judge for a hearing. The DUI also came with other charges, including reckless driving and driving on a suspended license.

In this state, any DUI charge after the fourth offense comes with more serious charges. They are class E felonies with mandatory jail time and mandatory prison sentences. The fines can range from $3,000-$15,000, and the jail sentence is a mandatory 150 consecutive days in jail.

The harsh consequences are meant as a deterrent for the crime of drunk driving in Tennessee, and they have helped to save the lives of many. But some individuals may be the victims of illegal stops, or their arrest may be based on inaccurate evidence. Those persons should not have to suffer the painful consequences of a felony DUI. A person who has been accused of the crime of drunk driving has the right to set up a strong defense against the charges. An experienced attorney can aid the person so that they receive the best possible outcome for the charges brought against them.
